Paying Off Your Credit Card Debt

It has become the “American way” to buy what you want before you’ve earned the money to pay for it. Credit cards, and credit card debt is the biggest culprit for this happening. But the debt has a way of spiraling out of control if you’re not careful. Paying off your credit card debt should be a top priority.

If you are someone who knows to pay your bills timely and in full, then this is not necessarily a problem. But, if you get accustomed to using your card every time you make a purchase, then the debt can add up quickly leaving you with astronomical amounts. Credit cards should be saved for emergencies, or at the least, used sparingly. If your card amounts are high, here are some suggestions to help you.

First, check your credit card statements against your own records. There are always mistakes made, and you could easily have charges on your account that are not yours. Be on the watch for. At the same time you can be on alert for any fraudulent use of your card, something that is very common right now! This watchful care will ensure that you only pay for you actually owe.

Secondly, if you have more than one card, concentrate on paying off the one with the highest interest rate first. This will lessen your overall charges.

Another option is to pay the smaller total, regardless of the interest rate. This action will create motivation, propelling you into paying off others, while closing one of your bills. Before you choose this option, sit down and calculate how much you will save, and how much you will spend on by not paying the higher interest cards. After careful consideration, this may prove to be a bad option for you after all if it requires you to divert funds from elsewhere that you may need to for daily living expenses.

List all your sources of income as you prepare to pay off your credit cards. To the extent that setting aside for savings may be put on the back burner for now, get back into it when you have the means. Continuing to save will give you peace of mind when emergencies arise, rather than causing you to go into further debt, the last thing you want right now!

Stop spending money needlessly! Make a budget and stick with it! Use every spare penny for paying off your credit card det. Take control of your finances, monitor them, and the results, within a few months, or years, will enable you to see your exact financial state.
